It’s not anything new when I say that I am a purveyor of purchasing anime DVD’s. I’m a person who raises his hand against downloaders of licensed anime with the wrath of a Bustersword-carrying super mech that has god mode and noclip turned on. This is because if there is one thing to convince anime distributors like Funimation to bring over more good shows into the west, it’s handing them all of our money.
Not everyone has the kind of cash to afford constantly buying anime DVD’s however, and it’s a very understandable problem that even I find myself in on many an occasion. But every once in a while I get enough money and go on a little purchasing spree, let on by either a very large sale, or close proximity to a convention’s Dealer’s Area.
So today I find myself being able to cross off several things on my to-do list. One of which being a continual question that I keep finding myself getting: “What anime should I buy next?”. Currently on rightstuf.com they are holding a massive Funimation sale, taking shows that are usually anywhere between $40 – $60 and bringing them down to something only like $25 and so forth. So here are some of the things currently in this sale that I recommend. If you’re currently in a Kraft-Dinner-For-Every-Meal-Having-A-Hard-Time-Paying-The-Bills state at the moment, most if not all of these suggestions should also be available on Funimation’s video streaming section of their website, or their Youtube where you can watch them for free. Although you don’t get the fancy cases, which are TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Anyways, let us begin:
Baccano!: The Complete Series – $23.99
![]()
There’s not much to say about Baccano! specifically that I have not already mentioned in my review (Review HERE) besides to say that aside from its wonderfully written story and English script, it contains one of – if not the – best English dub of recent times. For 24 bucks? It’s FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE!
Bamboo Blade: The Complete Series – $17.99
![]()
I haven’t personally said my thoughts on this series in a video review yet (although I plan to soon…), but putting it here is more than a recommendation, assuming you don’t get bogged down by sports. It’s a charming series with hilarious characters that make the $18 price tag kind of unreal. I linked to the S.A.V.E. edition because it’s $12 cheaper. You lose special features, but save almost enough money to buy another series. The regular version is here.
Desert Punk: The Complete Series – $23.99
![]()
Assuming you have nothing against humour that leans more towards the inappropriate and have no problem with offensive language, this, show, is, funny, as, ****. Seriously, if you get through an episode without laughing at least once at something, I seriously question your sense of humour. I have more detailed thoughts in my review (Linky).
Full Metal Panic! FUMOFFU – $23.99
![]()
This one is technically a little more pricy due to the fact that you’re only paying for half the amount of episodes than a series like Desert Punk, but the quality of the content SOOOOOOO makes up for it. A bit of a stretch, I know, but I paid more for an out-of-print copy, and even then it was worth every cent I spent. Check out my review HERE!
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo – $17.99
![]()
I know all I seem to be doing right now is just linking you to shows I’ve already told you to buy previously (assuming you watch all the reviews), but some of these deals are so freaking worth it, I just have to (especially for shows that I know are good because I’ve seen them a multitude of times). This is one of them, and if you’re unconvinced, watch the first minute or so from my review, then decide.
This one is a little more restricted to those who like cars, and like FAST cars, and like STREET RACING. The kind of person who plays Need For Speed, or any other kind of Racing Simulator (Podracer for the N64 totally counts), and just likes the feeling of racing. Sure, this is only Season 1 of a (more or less) 3.5 season series, but all of the other stages (another name for Season) are on for the same price. This is just the one to start with.
Kanon 2006 – The Complete Series – $17.99

Ok, last one for today, and I’m adding it because A) it’s somewhere in my top 15 anime of all time (though I haven’t updated that list in a while, so don’t quote me) and B) it adds some diversity to this sales list in that it’s great for more of the touchy-feely type of anime watcher. The dub isn’t completely horrible and only adds a bit of a bite to it if you can’t stand American adult voices attached to Japanese Moe schoolgirls (and their visual equivalents, because every woman in the show looks 25 or under). Still, a solid series to behold, and worth every penny. I also did a review which you can watch HERE!
So there you go, that should do you for awhile. Seven shows for you to buy / watch relatively soon. Is there anything else in the sale that I glossed over in favour of my personal favourites? What would you recommend people buy? Post a comment below. Here’s a link to everything in the current sale.
