Well, it’s been a long and winding road. Part of me is glad that I was unable to watch the final few episodes until they were all clustered together and I could watch them all in one go. It made for very good entertainment during a long trip up north. But at the same time, like with all shows that I end up becoming attached to, it’s sad to see them go. There are exceptions of course; sometimes I get too pissed off at an anime ending to BE sad, so there’s a plus side to Usagi Drop.

This facial expression makes Rin look like a frog...interesting.
So recently I had to ask myself why exactly it was that I sometimes get pissed off at anime endings. I had to recall a few. Sometimes it’s something simple, but unfortunately predictable. The ending of Shana II, for example, had me annoyed because they had this giant build up to the final moment when they would solve the gigantic romantic subplot that had developed over the two seasons, and then quickly cut to the ending credits right before we found out how everything got resolved (though Season Three comes out next month and I’m excited for that!). I also got annoyed at the ending of Black Butler II (it’s always the sequels, isn’t it?) because they went ahead and scrapped the ending that they had been implying would happen since the very first scene in the entire show. Which, I might add, they actually used as the proper ending for the first season before they retconed the result so that the second season could occur in the first place, and that annoyed me because it didn’t need to happen, but they did it anyways.

DAWWWWWWWWWWW even when she's sick she's still cute!
Usagi Drop had no reason for me to be upset. Well ok, there is one. Just the plan fact that the series is over is enough to be sad because it was one of the highlights of this past season. I’m disappointed that it only ended after eleven episodes as well. It’s not like there was a big climactic finale that could have prevented it from going to twelve episodes or even thirteen. Hell, the series could have gone a whole 24 and it still probably would have been amazing, though that might be pushing it quite a bit. I do prefer it to be shorter rather than it get too long and lose its quality.

Serious Rin is serious.
There were a lot of plot points that I would like to have seen get resolved as well. For example, we saw how Rin’s mother was desperately trying to work hard enough to forget about her mistakes with Rin, but we never saw it get properly resolved. I wouldn’t have minded seeing a reunion between Rin and her mother, assuming it went well and not horribly (which could have also happened, so on second thought, maybe I would), and I wanted to see Daikichi get together with Yukari (Kouki’s mom) and see something happen there, regardless of the likelihood that anything actually would.

You can totally see these two together right? Right...?
I just feel like even with the entirety of the series being amazing – and it truly is – it just falls short in that the final episode didn’t feel special at all. It didn’t feel like it tied up any loose ends. It just leaves us hanging there, now hoping and praying for something besides the occasional short episodes that are coming out on the Japanese DVD releases. If it does get a second season, then great, that fixes all problems that I have with Season One. But if not? It’s just slightly disappointing. Though if the only reason I dislike a show is because there isn’t anything more of it, that’s still a really good thing in its favour.

This is not the end. Only the beginning. We hope.
Bravo Usagi Drop, bravo.
