Yumekui Merry – Episode 01

Continuing on from yesterday when my opinion of anime as a whole was slowly dropping due to an abysmal showing of Infinate Stratos, I now turn to the next anime on my list for this winter 2011 season, Yumekui Merry.

The first episode of this anime is full of a lot of stuff, some of which is quite interesting, the unfortunate part about though is that none of it makes any sense as of yet.

The first scene is our introduction to Main character #1: Merry Nightmare, though it is not until later that we learn her name, as she wakes up in what looks to be a junkyard before trudging off into the opening credits.

The credits for Yumekui Merry are a bit more interesting, the music has this fast beat to it that I’m really likening, Than again it’s also done in part by IOSYS and I had a thing with listening to them in High school, usually in relation to Touhou, and the animation for it is good, though it’s rare that the animation for the OP isn’t but that’s a whole different conversation altogether, another time perhaps.

Anyways, after the opening credits we are introduced to Main character #2 Yumeji Fujiwara, who is being chased by an army of cats. Lovely, true we find out he’s dreaming the whole thing but that’s still kind of weird…..

So then we go through the boring bits following Fujiwara through his school day, the only interesting part of which is when it is revealed that he can make glasses with his fingers that allow him to see colors around a person that will correspond with their dreams. Also kind of messed up but I’ll go with that.

So then they had a look at all the cliché ways to introduce two main characters in an anime and decided to have Merry fall on Fujiwara, they also made it look like they landed butt on face, though as it turned out it was only butt on crotch, which is much less awkward.

So during her fall Merry loses her hat somehow and then Fujiwara picks it up later on only to be dragged into his dream by a nearby cat, only this time it’s not a dream, he can be hurt, and he has an army of cats and their leader (a Cat named Chaser) with a half Guillotine half saw type weapon (which admittedly is quite cool.) chasing after him through his haunted catlike dreamland.

So then with predictable timing right when Fujiwara is about to get his head chopped of so the cats can use his body as a vessel or something, Merry arrives because all this time Fujiwara has been holding on to her hat and she wanted it back. So Merry and Chaser fight and then we learn that Merry for some reason wants to go to the dream world, I don’t know if that’s where she came from originally or anything but she wants to go but chaser won’t take her. Merry and Fujiwara are then promptly deposited back in the real world. End of line for the first episode of Yumekui Merry.

Overall, this episode a hell of a lot better than the first episode Stratos though most of it doesn’t make a lot of sense so as long as by then end of it all you can sit back and go “Ooooohhhhhhhh” then Yumekui Merry is looking to be a half decent anime.
